January Habit Shifts

Hey friends! Happy New Year! I hope you had the best holiday season! This month is a great time to set intentions for the year and really dream for what you want to accomplish.

One of my favorite things to revisit every January is how our home supports us and how we need it to support us better. Maybe that’s redoing a room or just rearranging furniture...but our homes are our hubs - the foundation and place of respite that fuels us and how we relate to the world. It matters whether or not it’s doing the heavy lifting in the ways we need it to. Do backpacks get tossed at the backdoor with shoes as a tripping hazard? Does paperwork and computers piles up on the kitchen counter? Do towels stay on the bathroom sink wet because kids can’t hang them on the rack? Thinking about the little stressors and mapping out a solution will have a huge impact in your day to day sanity, I promise.

I also love to ask what rhythms are and aren’t working, then implement habits that help us function with more joy and less stress. Habits that last, good or bad, are identity based. To shift habits in a meaningful way we have to define WHO we are and WHO we want to be, then stop settling for less. Something I read from one of my favorite books, Atomic Habits, is if someone could only look at your habits in life, the actions you do consistently, what would they know to be true about you? Our habits are a good reflection of what we believe about who we are and in order to shifts habits, it starts with what believe about who we are. Morning people prioritize sleep and getting to bed on time. Healthy people prioritize eating food that fuels them not that just indulges them. Organizes people create systems in their life so everything has a place and a function. Define what you want to bring the table them put the processes and beliefs in place to get there.

The last thing we do in January is set family goals for the year. That may mean scheduling family trips now so they don’t get forgotten or putting weekly date nights on the calendar but whatever it is, we get intentional about how we are loving and connecting with each other. Life has a way of happening to us if we aren’t intentional about drawing our lines in the sand on what matters.

Foundation, function, becoming...three great areas to focus on as we start a new year filled with opportunity and hope. Praying this is a beautiful year in all of it for you!

In your corner -
